YAMAMOTO Yoshie

She reinterprets Noh as a captivating performing art that lives in the present day, working to expand its audience through performances that are accessible even to beginners, and by incorporating perspectives from contemporary visual artists. Her activities aim to pass on the culture of Noh across generations and share it with the world.

In 2016, she received the 1st Osaka Sakuyahime Award. Her “Noh for SDGs” initiative, which seeks to use tradition as a tool for building a sustainable society, was honored with the Good Design Award in 2020.

We believe that Kansai is a treasure trove of Japan’s history and culture — a birthplace of traditional performing arts and everyday cultural practices. The Expo presents a major opportunity for Japanese culture and values to resonate with people around the world and to spread globally. As Japanese culture gains international recognition and becomes more widely accepted as a global standard, we hope that Japan’s presence on the world stage will be strengthened. At the same time, we expect that within Japan, the beauty of traditional performing arts and cultural practices will be rediscovered and more deeply valued, ensuring their continuation for future generations.
