Professor, School of Engineering Department of Urban Design and Engineering, Osaka Metropolitan University
Born in Osaka, his specialties are urban planning, urban design, landscape design, and area management. He holds a master’s degree from the Tokyo Institute of Technology and a PhD in engineering, and is a registered first‑class architect and a professional engineer in urban and regional planning. Centered on the Keihanshin region, he works on urban regeneration through urban design, participatory community building, and spatial design. Notable projects include the revitalization of Water City Osaka, the Midosuji streetscape reorganization, downtown redevelopment in Kobe Sannomiya, and placemaking around Hirakata City Station. He has also taken a hands‑on approach to leveraging Osaka’s bridges as urban assets, for example through the Garden Bridge (Nakanoshima) deck‑space social experiment.
Osaka has long been known for its many bridges—once called “Naniwa 808 Bridges”—which have played vital roles in daily life and the city’s development. While many of these historic and scenic bridges remain, a number are now used merely as thoroughfares. With the EXPO 2025 Osaka, Kansai as a catalyst, we aim to rethink public space and restore bridges’ roles as community‑rooted civic places. By engaging local activity groups, businesses, and residents, we will pursue a modern “town bridge” initiative to enhance area value.
